Repairing Your Own Phone: Guides, Tools and When to Ask for Help

A cracked screen or tired battery does not always mean it is time for a new phone. If you have the right experience, a suitable workspace and the correct parts, a carefully planned repair can help you keep a device you already know. The first step is deciding whether the job is right for you.

At NXT GEN Tech Repairs in Leigh-on-Sea, we support both choices: preparing for your own repair or asking our team to carry it out. Our NXT GEN PARTS shop brings our available repair tools and handsets together, with screens, batteries and charging ports being prepared for the range.

Start with the exact model and the fault

Check your phone’s model in its settings before choosing a guide or ordering anything. An iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are different devices; do not assume their parts or opening procedures are interchangeable.

A charging problem does not automatically mean the charging port needs replacing, and poor battery life can have more than one cause. Check the simple possibilities first, such as a known-good compatible cable and charger. If the fault is uncertain, ask our team about an assessment before buying a replacement part.

Read the whole repair guide before opening the phone

Choose a guide for your exact model and repair. Read through the tools, materials, safety notes, disassembly and reassembly steps before starting. Check whether the job needs new adhesive, specialist tools, transferred components or a software finishing procedure.

These independent resources are useful starting points:

Apple describes Self Service Repair as intended for people with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. These links are third-party resources, not instructions written or controlled by NXT GEN. Check the current guide and its compatibility notes; there is no single procedure that covers every iPhone.

Prepare your tools, parts and workspace

Back up your data before repair. Work somewhere clean, dry and well lit, and keep screws organised by their original position. Follow the model guide’s instructions for powering down, battery charge level and disconnection order. Do not improvise heating temperatures or opening depths.

Our 27-piece phone repair tool set is £11.99 and includes precision screwdrivers, opening picks, suction cups, pry tools and tweezers. It is a useful starting kit, but it does not include every specialist tool, adhesive or material a particular repair may need. Compare its contents with your guide before ordering.

Browse the shop’s current range and check the individual listing for availability and compatibility. Parts being prepared for the catalogue are not yet available to order. When choosing a replacement screen, read the description carefully: aftermarket LCD and soft OLED are different options, and neither should be assumed to reproduce every feature of the original display.

Know when to stop

Do not attempt to remove or reuse a swollen, punctured or visibly damaged battery. Stop if a battery becomes hot, gives off an unusual smell or shows damage. Do not charge it or lever against it with a sharp or metal tool; seek professional help. Battery repairs can cause fire or injury if handled incorrectly.

Opening a phone can damage fragile flex cables, connectors or paired components. It also disturbs the seals: replacing adhesive alone does not prove the original water resistance has been restored. If a connector will not seat correctly, the guide no longer matches what you see, or removal needs unexpected force, stop and reassess.

Check the result before final assembly

Follow the guide’s safe testing and reassembly sequence. Check the functions relevant to the repair and any required calibration or finishing procedure. Do not promise yourself that Face ID, battery information or other features will work unchanged with every replacement part.

Our parts-only warranty is three months against manufacturing defects during normal use. Damage caused during fitting, handling or use is excluded from that voluntary cover. This does not exclude a fault or damage present when supplied, and your statutory rights remain unaffected. Read our returns and warranty terms before ordering.

Choose the route that suits you

If the repair looks manageable, prepare properly and use the exact model guide. If you would prefer us to do the work, check prices and book a repair. If you decide to replace your device, browse our new and refurbished handsets and read the individual condition notes.
